This scroll shows dogs playing in the snow, painted in 1859 (Ansei 5) by the renowned artist Kida Kadō (1802–1879). For historical context, it was created just 5 years after Commodore Perry’s arrival in Japan and shortly before the American Civil War. The scroll is housed in its original inscribed wooden storage box, still in good condition.

Kida Kadō was a Gifu-born painter active mainly in Nagoya, serving as an official artist for the Owari Tokugawa clan. His works have been exhibited at the Aichi Prefectural Museum, the British Museum, and are held in the permanent collections of Myōji Temple (Gifu) and the Ichinomiya City Museum. This is an excellent collector and investment piece.
