Folgers Coffee is a company very proud of their virtuous history. Through strategic growth and rightfulness, they’ve become the #1 leading brand of coffee sold in the United States.
Who knew that Folgers at one point sold vanilla extract? The business began in 1850 as a coffee, spice, and extract distributor in San Francisco. In the early 1920s (just before the Great Depression), they sold the spice + extract portion of the business in order to focus entirely on coffee. Soon after, they started packaging coffee in previously unheard of ways: pre-ground, single-serve, and instant.
The founder, James A. Folger died in 1889 at the young age of 54. A year before his death, he wrote a letter to his son / company predecessor James A. Folger II defining his noble business mentality. He advised: “Money-making was always secondary to a good reputation.”
